CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
What is trending now in the society among the male folks, many guys I see along the street are either growing beards or they are admiring those with beards. Most guys with beards don’t have a clue on how to groom beards to make them look more attractive and comfortable.
This book is primarily written for everyone who is a lover of beards, both ladies are inclusive, reason being that they can learn and teach either their boyfriends or husbands. No knowledge is a waste, one can never tell where and when that information might be useful.
DEFINITION OF A BEARD.
A beard is the collection of hair that grows on the chin and cheeks of humans. Evolutionary psychology explanations for the existence of beards include signaling sexual maturity and signaling dominance by increasing perceived size of jaws, and clean-shaved faces are rated less dominant than bearded.
The beard itself is a physical characteristic that separates men from boys. In today’s society that has downplayed good old-fashioned masculinity, growing a beard shows that you are not afraid of being a manly man.
Growing a beard has its set of trials and tribulations and the bearded lifestyle IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. Whether or not you should grow a beard depends in large part on genetics.
If your genes permit, it’s an adventure every man should undertake at least once in his life time.
Like every worthwhile venture, being a part of the exclusive beard gang crew has its rules, rules that must be adhered to if you want to look prim and proper.
 CHOOSE A STYLE
Beards come in varying styles. Your choice will depend on your jaw profile and genes. You can choose one that is high maintenance, low maintenance or no maintenance. If you like grooming yourself daily and have the time and patience for it, you can choose advanced styles like the full beard. If you cannot produce the full beard, choose a style that makes the best use of your beard-growth pattern, be it the goatee, the chin curtain, the chin strip, or another variation.

YOU MUST HAVE A BEARD SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER
Ever heard “I tried to grow my beard out, but I had irritation”? This is because when you stop shaving, your skin produces more dead skin cells that get trapped in the bristles of your new developing beard. Washing with a proper beard shampoo will help clear this up for you while replenishing natural oils stripped away by other shampoos and soaps. A cleansing conditioner will protect the skin underneath with an anti-itch PH formula. Washing your beard with regular scalp hair shampoo will actually make the irritation worse, leaving your beard hair dry, lifeless, and results in itchy beard hair similar to steel wool in some cases.
BRUSH THE BEARD REGULARLY
An unwritten beard gang code is that the beard is never left to fend for its self. Its important to get yourself a beard brush and a comb. A good beard brush will train your hairs in the right direction and distribute conditioning oils for maximum effect. Brush the hairs outwards, this will show you areas that need your attention. Once you are done trimming, simply brush the beard down. Brushing helps exfoliate the skin and prevent ingrown hair.
 KNOW WHEN TO TRIM
As your beard grows into a real beard, you will need to know when to trim up. Many guys take charge of their own beard maintenance, not trusting the care of their beards to anyone else. It can be tough these days to find a barber who really knows his stuff when it comes to beard trimming.
If you cannot find a barber who is sufficiently trustworthy to trim your beard, buy a beard trimmer and learn to use it. Not all hairs grow at the same length nor in the same direction. It is important to trim starting at the ears down to your neck in order to keep a nice level and even beard length throughout.
EAT WITH CARE
We don’t mean being selective with your diet (that may help on a general level) we mean ensuring you eat in such a manner that you don’t leave the table with particles of food on your beard- that’s downright disgusting. If you have consciously chosen to identify with the beard gang , you might have to watch out for foods like the okro soup(Nigeria draw soup)!!. A bit of sloppiness while eating can negate all your efforts at grooming.
A LITTLE BACKGROUND
Like tight pants and suspenders, the resurgent popularity of beards in all their many forms is actually part of fashion cycle that has gone on for centuries. In some eras, they were considered the quintessence of the upstanding man, in others, the reserve of the ruffian or outlaw (to discourage them, Peter the Great even taxed facial hair). Interestingly, historians have noted that one of the chief influences over beard and facial hair fashion throughout history has been the military.
"Throughout military history, beards were perfectly okay and seen as a sign of strength [with a few exceptions]," says Antonio Centeno, former U.S. Marine Corps officer and founder of the style consulting resource, (RealMenRealStyle.com). "But we've been clean-shaven in the military since World War I, thanks to the need to form a seal when wearing gas masks." That quirk of technology soon trickled into civilian life and the workplace, and within a generation, our grandfathers were sporting a smooth face, suddenly the sign of dignity.
Still, as with all fashions, what was old is eventually new again. Dr. Allan Peterkin, beard expert and author of 'One Thousand Beards: A Cultural History of Facial Hairexpresslinklogistics.blogspot.com,' says that latter-day beard growth, as it were, is no longer a function of army culture, but instead comes from pop culture influences. "Some even see growing a beard as a playful backlash to feminism, being one of the few things women can't do," he says.
As with any bold sartorial choice, a beard done right reflects a sense of style and confidence. (Done wrong, well, you look like an extra from 'Lord of the Rings.') Growing out your facial hair is merely the first step, so following are tips on how to style, groom, and maintain a beard so that it flatters instead of flunks.
Jake Curtis
Not every style of beard matches every face shape, so you'll need to figure out what suits your particular mug. Doing so will mean the difference between flattering facial hair and a lifetime of trying to hide old photos of yourself. "Beards can really enhance a face and hide a multitude of sins," Dr. Peterkin says. "But they can also bring out certain features, like a weak jaw, thin lips, flabby neck, and baldness, too. It's about playing with planes, both vertical and horizontal, and making everything blend together."
Rounder faces or those with double chins do well with some strong lines and borders that soften the curves. Try adding some geometric balance with a squared-off goatee or beard – or just longer whiskers on the chin with shorter hair on the side. Angular faces sometimes have sunken cheeks that you can fill in with some longer hair to add girth. For long faces, a full beard that's thicker on the side and shorter around the mouth and chin can break things up into two hemispheres and bring your mug into proportion. If you can't objectively figure it out on your own, consult with a barber, who will be happy to make a recommendation.
There's a world of difference between a guy who has grown a beard and another who just hasn't bothered to shave. Beards require regular grooming and regular maintenance. How much depends on the style of beard you have, but in general you'll need to use a razor daily for a clean line at the top and on the neck. When cleaning up the neck and edges, shave along the grain using warm water, not hot, and only go over an area once. "Be sure to keep the razor clean and change the blade every five shaves," says Dr. Peterkin. "And to preserve your blade (and skin) always shake out the blade to dry it to avoid rusting."
